Can Supplements Help With Memory Loss?

A recent study, published in Scientific Reports, looks at the efficacy of supplementation to treat or prevent memory loss. As the study explains, there are 3 primary causes of memory loss, which can eventually lead to dementia: 1. The accumulation of beta-amyloid protein (Aβ), 2. The accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles (containing tau protein), 3. Neuroinflammation.

The study looked at memory-support supplements’ ability to inhibit or reduce these factors, specifically the beta-amyloid protein and the neurofibrillary tangles, thus reducing the chance of severe memory loss. The study found that the memory-support supplement, Percepta, “has the most potent ability to disaggregate/reduce Aβ 1–42 fibrils and tau protein.” Additionally, supplements that contained cat’s claw or polyphenols, “demonstrated some Aβ fibril and tau protein tangle reducing activity, but were much less effective than percepta.”

This study confirmed that “percepta is one of the best dietary supplements that cause a marked reduction and inhibition of Aβ fibrils and tau tangle filaments — two important major targets for memory-support.”

One of the researchers in this study, Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, has been on our podcast, SuperAge, in which he shared with us other supplements that boost our brain’s health.
