Steven Smith: Kanye’s Sneaker God

With a creative vision that consistently reaches into the future, Steven Smith is used to his designs being misunderstood before they become enduring classics. He spent much of his career as a sneaker designer for brands including Reebok, for which he created the iconic Fury; and for Nike, who mysteriously dismissed him after he passed 40. Now he is unleashing his unbridled creativity designing Yeezys with Kanye West. He tells us about his passion for all kinds of design, how the arrival of the Walkman changed the sneaker industry, and why he races his VW Beetle but simply drives his Porsche.

“I always looked at it as like: If I show this design and people get really nervous and uncomfortable, I’m going the right direction.”
