    Big Sur, Highway 1 reopens

    highway 1 in california re-opens

After 14 months of closure due to a massive landslide near Big Sur, Highway 1 has re-opened—possibly to the mixed feelings of residents. They may have missed the tourist income, but they had a calm respite from the summer traffic. Big Sur fully lives up to its reputation as one of the premier drives in the world. The views can sometimes be obscured by fog and rain, but that makes the vibe even more mysterious and powerful. You may want to check out The Esalen Institute for its programs, which are the cure de jour of the tech programmer set. For cabins in the amazing hobbit-like woods, have a look at Big Sur Camp. Or if you are in the mood to go big, there is always the incomparable Post Ranch Inn.
