The Benefit of Using a Salt Substitute

If one has a history of stroke or cardiovascular events, one may benefit from using a salt substitute. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine explored the impacts of salt substitutions on stroke, adverse cardiovascular events, and death. The study had over 20,000 participants with a mean age of 65.4. The study found that those who used salt substitutes had a lower rate of stroke and major cardiovascular events, even the participants who had a history of strokes or were 60 years and older. The ratio for the salt substitute used was 75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride by mass as opposed to regular salt which is 100% sodium chloride. Our bodies need sodium for functions like controlling blood pressure and maintaining our electrolyte balance so check with your doctor about your optimal levels.
